Who’s The Fool: Are We Gambling?

In poker the first rule is if you don’t know who the fool is at the table it must be you.
I know it doesn’t seem like we are gambling when buying food at the grocery. But, the truth is we really are. The government and the food industry do there best at containing the bad news about food borne illness.
Moreover, they do a better job at covering up the way the food is grown and other things I have already beat to death. But the interesting thing is the marketing side of the industry is pretty interesting.
As consumers we all act and react to pretty pictures and word choices that makes us buy. This is called “direct response marketing”. Everyone involved are marketing pro’s.
In researching the egg recall I found the industrial egg farm that was responsible for the mess is a company called Wright County Egg. Now that sounds like a pretty down home small town company. But, when you recall 380 million eggs…well that is not a small town egg company.

Marketing pro’s use A/B testing. This means they are always changing one thing at a time and test it against their best performing ads on the carton. Inside the carton are the same eggs grown in the same industrial chicken houses. It is all about making more sales to consumers who are driven by emotion only.
If you don’t know who the fool is at the table it is probably you. Get to know your local farmer. Get the best food for you family.
