Fresh Produce

Coming soon!

We are expermenting at Nature’s Choice Farms with fresh produce. Not just any produce. We grow our produce in a similar fashion as we grow our pastured chickens… no chemicals and no growth additives of any kind.

We began our produce production by starting with the basic’s. We built a couple of raised beds in the backyard. We experimented with the soil in the beds until we had tomato trees instead of tomato plants.  All the while using no chemicals of any kind.

We made sure we didn’t shoot ourselves in the foot by growing high yielding plants to sacrifice  taste or nutrition. We grew six tomato plants in a 12 foot long raised bed right down the center. We were suppose to have enough room for peppers on the edges. In three weeks we had to transplant the peppers because the tomatoes were overflowing both sides  from one end to the other.

Then we moved on to raising  top quality plants in our greenhouses. This gave us the foundation we needed to understand how each plant is different from the other and how much care each needed to flourish. We planted some for our own use first. If there is such a thing as too much success we experienced it. Our chemical free growing medium produces the most wonderful slips we could have asked for. Our plant center became so over run with plants that we had to have an overstock sale to liquidate just to liquidate the extra plants. Our neighbors loved the plants so much we are going to raise extra’s next spring on purpose.

The key to superior produce is in the soil. We grow the best produce without any chemicals by building up the soil with organic matter and compost. If the soil is right you won’t be able to stop the produce from growing.

We learned how to balance the soil natures way making sure the bacteria and fungi was in correct balance for each individual  plant variety  in the fields. Raising vegetables in a controlled environment like a raised bed is one thing. But, to raise high yielding vegetables on a massive scale with no chemicals is much bigger challenge. Our soil in a large area must be managed with the same care and precision as our small 12 x 4 raised beds and this is not small task.

About the time we got a good handle on the soil and the plants coming together our biggest problem hit us … the deer and the rabbits loved our plants. They ate everyone of our green bean plants.  And the darn deer took the tops off or our cuke’s in one night. We have these back on the road to recovery.

We put a lot of pressure on these pests now. Things seem to be coming around wonderfully.
